There is a question at the heart of every election in America — one so fundamental it should never need to be asked: Are the people casting ballots actually American citizens?
Today, there is no federal requirement to prove U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The system relies on an honor system — a checkbox on a form. No documentary proof. No verification. Just a signature and a promise.
The SAVE Act was introduced to fix this. It passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. But when it reached the Senate, it stalled. Lawmakers who talk about election integrity on camera refused to act when it mattered.
The stakes could not be higher. Every fraudulent vote cast in an American election cancels out a legitimate citizen's vote. It doesn't matter whether it happens once or a thousand times — each instance is a direct assault on the constitutional rights of every American who shows up and plays by the rules.
This is not a partisan issue. Poll after poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans — Republican, Democrat, and Independent — support requiring proof of citizenship to vote. It is a commonsense safeguard that most democracies around the world already have in place.
